Starting from profiles
Warning: This has been deprecated since it is now possible to create profiles in niViz, save as caaml6 and start Snowpack on the caaml file.
So this page is only here for historical purposes, please do not use it nor request support on this!
Introduction
With the upcoming CAAML profiles, there will be a much easier way of doing this. What is laid out below is for creating sno or smet profiles.
Converting the measured parameters
As laid out in Steinkogler, W., Systematic assessment of new snow settlement in SNOWPACK, MSc, University of Innsbruck, Innsbruck, Austria, 94 + x pp., 2009, you need the following information:
- properly identify the layers in the density profile and match them to the grain type profile
- compute the volume fractions θ from the density profile (with θi = ρ / 917);
- evaluate dd and sp with the help of the grain classification scheme;
- evaluate rg and rb from the table below;
- evaluate/interpolate each layer's temperature;
- evaluate the date when each layer was created (through the help of threads, automatic snow height measurements, etc);
- when using snow harps, distribute them to the proper layers and attribute to each harp a 1cm thick element
